West Follow Up Study – Survey

Waco-McLennan County Public Health District (WMCPHD) is conducting a follow-up study to assess long-term health impacts among the residents of the West community following the 2013 West Fertilizer Plant explosion. The study will provide information on residents’ behavioral health, respiratory health, and other conditions associated with the explosion.

Residents of the City of West are invited to participate in the survey, which can be completed online at or during a face-to-face interview.  The online version will be live April 1, 2019 until May 31, 2019.

The face-to-face interviews will be conducted with residents who have not completed the online version April 22, 2019 through May 3, 2019 between the hours of 10am-2pm and 3-7pm.

The findings of this study could be useful for the policy makers, health care providers, and public health officials in understanding long-term consequences associated with such incidences. Furthermore, the study can be used as a “needs assessment tool” to identify health needs of the residents in West, Texas and can be beneficial in resource allocation, appropriate referrals and increasing provider awareness in the area.

In summary, this study will help us better understand the long-term implications of the explosion on the community and plan interventions if needed.
